The Pie Poll Revisited: Rank Your 5 Favorites...

by Jeff B » Fri Dec 06, 2013 12:57 am

Since I'm in pie mode (not to be confused with a la mode), I thought I'd re-visit one of my all time favorite threads - The Pie Poll. Just in case your tastes have changed, or you missed the original Pie Poll, what are your 5 favorite pies?

In trying to rank my 5 favorites (somewhat of an impossible task), I'd go with...

1. Blueberry
For me, a luscious blueberry pie is what apple pie is supposed to be - a fail safe all American staple.

2. Lemon
I adore lemon pie. Curiously, though I can enjoy them with meringue, I actually prefer a "flat top" on my lemon pie.

3. Chocolate
I think chocolate pies are underrated. They usually don't top many favorites lists yet just one slice can be the decadent highlight of your day. :)

4. Cherry
Cherry pie is a little ways down the list just because it can be a bit fickle.

5. Banana Creme
I like it but a little goes a long way.

Pies that don't float my boat (despite their popularity)...

Apple
Pumpkin
Strawberry

Hmm ... I'll play, although I'm not a huge (get it?) dessert fan, and pies don't even rank at the top of my wish list when I do want a dessert. Still, I won't say no to a small, well-made slice of something I like.

The ranking is pretty much random, as they're all about equally attractive in my point of view.

1. Pecan
2. Chocolate-bourbon-nut, a local confection trademarked as Derby-Pie® by a local firm that is extremely litigious with people who try to adopt their mark.
3. Chocolate-peanut butter
4. Strawberry
5. Tarte Tatin

Other than pumpkin, only fruit pies for me!

Pumpkin, apricot, apple, fresh peach and cherry are my favorites.

Not a big pie eater. A good friend of mine used to make all from scratch excellent pies and one time she asked me what kind of pie I wanted for my B-day. I asked for Coconut Cream...it was a memory maker pie.
When fresh fruits are in season here, I make crumbles. No favorites come to mind, they are all good. I did mention the pear pie our next door neighbor made in another post that was always excellent.

I can enjoy pretty much any pie if it's executed at a high level, but fruit pies would probably have to be my favorite because they are less heavy than the ones with chocolate, nuts, or sweet potato/pumpkin and such.

Among the fruit pies, blueberry, cherry, blackberry and peach stand out, mainly because I love those fruits. (And following the same logic, apple pie is often just as boring as apples themselves).

I've also always had a soft spot for the lovely texture of meringue pies, growing up my mother always made lemon meringue pies but now that I have access to a German mother-in-law I enjoy her plum or gooseberry meringue pies.

Apple a la mode French vanilla
French apple a la mode
pumpkin
cherry
black bottom
If you can obtain wild blueberries that would actually be my third choice. The blueberries purchased in the markets are almost tasteless.
