1998 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (10/10/2013)
It's a little bit surprising to say that a 15 year old, inexpensive wine (this cost $11.99 on release) is just starting to mature, but well, there it is. Lots of fruit still showing, mostly on the lemony side, but not tart/astringent. It has a subtle level of creaminess, just enough to provide a touch of richness/breadth to what is otherwise a very sleek wine. It's classical spatlese, not modern, overstuffed auslese sold as spatlese, and as such provides refreshement and very easy drinking pleasure, while still being complex and clearly evocative of the Treppchen. What a lovely wine, from a producer, that while not among the Mosel elite, still provdes wines that make me smile, time after time.
