Wine Focus: WHOA! September sure went fast!

by Robin Garr » Thu Sep 26, 2013 6:30 pm

October 1 is Tuesday! Any thoughts on an October wine? If we can come up with something good by tomorrow morning, I'll give it advance notice in tomorrow's 30 Second Wine Advisor and see if we can drum up any newbies.

Usual reminder: Interesting enough to encourage good conversations; available enough that our international members can enjoy it (or at least use a related substitute) and affordable enough that it won't be a burden. And finally, not "dumbed down."

Can we do all that? Let's try!

Zinfandel/Primitivo? Should I duck from all the brickbats aimed at me? Its cold here this evening and I am thinking stews, Zinfandel..along those lines. Tomorrow I might think different :)

A different idea - how about Southern Hemisphere - Argentina, Chile, South Africa, OZ, NZ?
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Can I ask for a one month delay on South America to November? I might have some interesting insights by that time...

No brickbats, Shaji. They're not my favorites, but I'll go with whatever flow develops. :)

Zinfandel/Primitivo sounds like a good idea to me. Feel sure Tim will have some access to P in his area :) .

There are a few P around here but I've rarely found a good one. Some Z are also around but ditto for difficulty in finding a good one and they are usually a lot dearer than P. But if I saw a Geyserville or Lytton Springs I would grab it.

That's pretty much my issue with this topic. Primitivo tends to be forgettable, and most of the California Zins come in around 16 percent.

Most? 16 percent? Do you only see Turley from the late '90s/early '00s in your stores Robin?

Naw, but that's probably about when I stopped drinking Zin.

So, is Z/P a good plan?

I'm ok with it. I'm always in the mood for Ridge, and I have a bottle of the Lagier-Meredith "Tribidrag" staring at me in the cellar.

Don't know if you have ever done this, but you could do "wines from Piedmonte". There are very nice whites as well as compelling reds. We had the '07 Massimo Rivette Barbaresco "Froi" last night. Most enjoyable. Lots to talk about there.

Another thought is Aglianico. Sure to create some interest I think?

Maybe to bring in more contributors we could do A and Z (Aglianico and Zinfandel) or Zinfandel and Nebbiolo. Personally, I like some Aglianico but don't have many opportunties to purchase it. I do have some Zinfandel on hand and one Barolo.

So it's September 30. There's clearly no consensus/enthusiasm for a specific topic.

How about we just do the Zin/Primitivo/Tribidrag/whateverthehellelseit'scalled and then go to Nebbiolo in November?
