Willamette Wineries ???

by OW Holmes » Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:25 pm

Beth and i will be spending a couple of days between Portland and Salem in August. I know, its no reason to miss MoCool, but i want to make the most of it. What wineries are "must visit" places? Not necessarily just the best wine, but fun places to visit and/or tour.

Stone Wolf with Linda Lindsay!
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

I agree with Howie. Best winery visit in Willamette by far. We spent the better part of an afternoon tasting wines back in the barrel room (warehouse), here try this barrel, no try this one, spitting in the floor drain...Linda is a hoot and a gracious, generous host. Not the most glamorous, glitzy place, but definitely the friendliest place in town.

If weather is good, Torii Mor and Lange, next to each other in Dundee Hills have beautiful scenery and decent Pinot Noirs. You may want to visit Argyle tasting room (can try sparkling wine as well as P.N.). Chehalem is another I enjoyed touring.

Domaine Drouhin is beautiful.

I prefer the smaller places. Some may need appointments.

Great places and wine are ... off the top of my head ..

Matello
Biggio-Hamina
St Innocent/Zenith
Belle Pente
Scott Paul
Remy Wines (Italian varietals or varieties ... always mix those up)

And while in Portland try to visit the urban wineries at the SE Wine Collective.

Eat at Recipe in Newberg. Crazy good.

You can say that again. You will be missed at MoCool.

Although, I admit touring the Willamette was great :D when we were there. We used Stone Wolf as our touchstone winery base during our visit. Linda and her right hand woman, Jessica, were great hosts that treated us well. Very good and affordable wine, too. I should know, I bought a mixed case in 2010 and it is all gone.

In my experience, the best wineries I visited were, in no particular order, Carlton Cellars, Patricia Green, and St. Innocent. Carlton had some great pinots at QPR prices and the tasting with the assistant winemaker was fun (appointment for that one). The tasting experience at Patricia Green with the winemaker was great, but we made an appointment for that one too. And, St. Innocent has a great tasting room in a beautiful setting at the top of a hill and the most burgundian pinots I tasted while in the Willamette.

Enjoy your visit!
