MoCool 2013 Horizontal and Vertical for Sundial vineyard

by Tom N. » Mon Jul 29, 2013 10:21 pm

Dear MoCoolers,

I have never experienced a horizontal and vertical wine tasting. I am bringing one to MoCool this year for the picnic.

I invite anyone with other riesling wines from the sundial vineyard (Wehlener Sonnenuhr) from the mosel to add to my horizontal or vertical tasting

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Horizontal:

2007 Studert Prum Riesling Spatlese
2007 Selbach-Oster Riesling Kabinett
2007 Max ferd Richter Riesling Kabinett

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Vertical

2007 Studert Prum Riesling Spatlese
2008 Studert Prum Riesling Kabinett
2009 Studert Prum Riesling Kabinett

Possible Wehlener Sonnenuhr minihorizontal bonus:

2009 Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Riesling Spatlese (I have decided not to bring this wine, we have plenty of 2007s for the horizontal, see below)

Let me know if you have any wines to add to the lineup  .

I have seven bottles from Wehlener Sonnenuhr dating from 2006 to 2011 including that Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Riesling Spatlese you mention as a possibility. Mine are mainly Dr. Loosen and Joh. Jos. Prum. I will probably bring the 2010 Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese.

Thank you Jane,

I will be looking forward to your addition of the JJ Prum. Which Prum will be better? You will have to come to MoCool to find out.

If'n I don't forget, I'll bring two of Manfred's bottles. Both '89s... one Kab and one Spät . . . . thought I had one other, but I think my mind is playing tricks with me.....

Mike, it's going to be great to see you again, as always. It is amazing to me just how many really good friends I have made over the years of Mo'Cool attendance.

Hi Mike,
Glad to hear you are coming for sure. Do you want me to send you a reminder for your failing gray matter? Your 89s are most welcome and will really extend our vertical. Looking forward to tasting them. Thanks for your generosity.

I have received some private messages from two individuals who will be adding wines to this tasting. The wines being added are:

2005 Studert-Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
and maybe
2005 Dr. F. Weins-Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese

AND

two half bottles of 2007 the 2007 *** Auction Auslese from Heribert Kerpen for the horizontal,
and a 2005 Joh. Jos Prüm Goldkap Auslese AP 28, for a potential vertical.

This tasting is shaping up as really exciting mix of wines that should give us a great look at the individual styles of many of the best German winemakers.

Tom, sounds like an excellent time for all Riesling fans. I hope that someone will be taking notes for those of us un-fortunates!

Hi Bob,

I will try to take some coherent notes. I plan to have this tasting early in the day during the picnic, so I should be in good enough shape to write something that makes sense at the time. The later it gets on Saturday the more difficult it gets to write, for some reason.

Tom, The "Party Source in Northern Kentucky has the 2011 vintage from Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Wehlener Sonnenuhr in the Kabinett and in the Auslese level wines. There are also some JJ Prum from the same vineyard from the 2011 Vintage In the Auslese and Spatlese levels. which would you prefer. If I bring the 2011 from Dr. Pauly it would mean that JC could leave her2011 at home. Just a thought. Or, I could just get the two Prum wines for the on theme table.

Hi Brother Bob H.

I would prefer the JJ Prum, just because of others bringing JJ Prum from different years, that will constitute a ladder vertical, so to speak. That is a vertical of Studert-Prum and a vertical of JJ Prum, with horizontal rungs of both when we have both for the same year! This tasting is getting more interesting all the time. I really am getting excited about. Thanks for the offer.

Bob, I have heard nothing from David about attending Mo'Cool this year. (nor any other year), However John Trombley will be there with a car full of rieslings plus a sampling of Michigan wines. Every year I have to realize that this year could be my last year attending Mo'Cool. Given my age now, plus the situation with my wife, my time is fully used up. I am throwing caution to the winds this year and will be there for 4 days coming in on Thursday and then leaving for home Sunday morning. As always I am looking forward to the greatest wine tasting I've ever heard of, much less attended.

Hi Joshua,

Thank you for the offer. I would like you to bring your 2006 J. J. Prum for the vertical. We have a number of people bringing J. J. Prum wines and that vertical is getting better all the time, thanks to generous offers from people like yourself. My vertical is Studert-Prum and I think it will be interesting to see which Prum wows the wineaus the most.

I will be making a stop at the wine store before going to MOCOOL and they offer the following. Any preferences?
2007 S.A. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
2007 Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
2002 Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
2011 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

You could do it blind for kicks, but normally there shouldn't be any doubt about which one is more impressive, should there?

Hi Tom,

Since I have the Kerpen '01 Auslese, which is supposed to be not bad, why not include that as well?

And yes, Rahsaan, I suspect we know which Prum is better, but it will be interesting to drink through them all.

Best to all,
Josh

Hi Josh,

Yes, that would a nice addition, so bring the '01 Kerpen. That gives us another vertical winery to check out.

Dumb question - Are S.A. Prüm and Studert Prüm the same thing?
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
