WTN: 2010 Tercero Grenache Blanc

by David M. Bueker » Wed May 29, 2013 7:30 am

2010 Tercero Grenache Blanc Camp 4 Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez ValleyOpened at cellar temp which seems good for this wine. It helps the peachy fruit come forward. There is some nice spice as well. The balance is good, and the texture is light enough that the wine avoids the ponderousness that the grape can sometimes fall into. I like this, eventhough I am not generally a fan of Rhone variety white wines.

I really like the recent Tercero wines. I've visited the tasting room a couple times in the last month, and I attended a Tercero wine dinner in a private home, which Larry Schaffer, the wine maker, attended. Of the line-up, the Grenache Blanc is my least favorite of the whites, though I'm happy to drink it!

I really like the Viognier, and Larry is making an amazing Gerwurtztraminer, which he call The Outlier, i guess cuz its non-rhone, which smells like G wine, but is like no G wine I've had on the palate; it's delicious.

Tercero also has a dedicated Mourvèdre Rosé that impresses me too. I won't say it's Tempier-like, but that's what I think.

And we haven't said anything about the reds, which are also stellar.
Cheers, Jim

I actually prefer Larry's red wines.

Turns out the Grenache Blanc is my favorite of his whites. I really struggled with the atypical nature of the Outlier.

Nope. Larry Schaffer's winery.
