White Burgundy Question?

by Jim Grow » Sun Apr 28, 2013 10:40 am

I picked up a couple of white burgundys recently on discount and wonder if they might be closed up or just too young to fully enjoy now. They are: 2009 Louis Jadot Meursault and 2009 Louis Latour Meursault. I realize these bottles are not vineyard designated but still may merit some interest and complexity given time. Lay down or consume or either?

Hi Jim,

Burghound says hold the Latour till '14 or longer and the Jadot until '15 or longer. Meadows always has long hold times, but I would definitely give the Jadot a couple more years, assuming, of course, that the wines were well stored.

Best,
Josh

Well, to date no one has come up with a conclusive cause for PremOx, so I'd not count on that problem being solved. Jadot has had real issues, not sure about Louis Latour. But that usually pops up 6-8 years after vintage, so either probably ok to hold a couple years if they have been well-treated (always a concern if closed out).
I don't usually think village level white Burgs in ripe vintages tend to close down hard. The only reason I'd generally particularly hold is if I felt the oak needed to integrate.

I am with Dale on this. Drink up by end of 2014 to be safe.

this was a ripe low acid year so i would err on the side of caution. these are not great wines so freshness will not count against them. drink within the year is my thought.

Jim,

I've had a couple of the '09 Latour Meursaults in the last eight months. It is a nice rich, buttery white Burg. I don't think you will gain much by cellaring it, so I would drink up in the near future. Give the wine about 15 minutes in a decanter to let the acidity mellow a bit, then pour away.

Thanks all for the advice. I'll put these wines in the "near term" consumption schedule.
