WTN: EdmundsStJohn Bone-Jolly '03...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:10 am

Tried this throw-away wine last night:
1. EdmundsStJohn Bone-Jolly GamayNoir WittersVnyd/ElDoradoCnty (13%) Intuition&BlandLuck 2003: Med.color w/ some bricking/browning; light/low-key rather earthy/dusty slight metallic/ozone/funky/decaying leaf pile slight gamey/meaty very light licorice/strawberry somewhat interesting nose; fairly tart/tangy/metallic rather earthy/dusty/loamy/leave pile/faded rose petal slight licorice/pungent bit cedary/pencilly/old red flavor w/ no tannins; med.long light tart/tangy bit metallic/pungent rather earthy/dusty/composty/dried rose petal finish w/ very light tannins; some old Zin/cedary/pencilly character and a bit old Beauj but not dried out/astringent; no obvious fruit but rather interesting drinking; this is not why we drink Bone-Jolly and there's not much left, but not at all totally shot like I expected.

 Ah young vines and an inferior new world vineyard site. If this was real Beaujolais it would just be getting going. Why I once had an 1804 Morgon that was barely hitting its tride...

'03 was probably my least favorite vintage of the wine. It was also a year (along with '02 and'04) in which the wine spent some time in wood, and the '03 was in wood longest of the three due to logistical issues. I'd have thought it would be totally shot, too.
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...
