Wine Food Matches for Valentines Day

So, just wondering what wine and food matches are planned by those who might be staying home this evening to celebrate the love fest, or for that matter those who might be going out a la BYO.

We'll be staying home as we have the past 10 or so years and boiling up a couple of very nice lobsters. After deciding to mix it up a bit and not go with the usual Chardonnay it came down to a choice between an '11 Daniel Crochet Sancerre Rose, an '09 Copain James Berry Roussanne from Paso Robles, and a 2010 Broglia Gavi.

Decided to give the Cortese grape a try and go with the Gavi, partially because it's a weeknight and 1/2 a bottle at 12.5% is more merciful than a 1/2 bottle at 14%.

We had lobster tonight also, but I did not have a Vouvray on hand (my favorite lobster pairing), so I substituted a 2006 Megalomaniac Riesling - worked out pretty good.

I actually ended up having a Rosso di Montalcino on my own. Laura has a sinus infection, so no wine for her. Maybe this weekend if the meds kick in.

I had a meeting last night, so we did V-Day dinner Wed. Betsy heard Melissa Clark from NYT on Leonard Lopate earlier in week, liked suggestion of Cornish game hens. A recipe that could go red or white, she choose white, we went with a Matrot Meursault

I like a Huet Vouvray with lobster, a demi sec actually. I have also found it's a good match to drink a big Ca chard.

That's what we usually drink with steamed lobster, a big Cali Chardonnay, and we really like the match. The 2010 Broglia Gavi turned out to be a great match too. We found it an interesting and very enjoyable bottle of wine, fairly fragrant nose of flowers and melony fruit with a slight nutty character, on the palette the wine is clean and fresh upon entry, you'd expect it to be more angular but after the initial impression it's actually rather full and round with excellent balance and persistence, very Italian to me.

I think next Valentines day I'll have to convince the better half to forgo the lobster and go with an impressive beef or lamb dish so I can break into my case of 2001 Calon Segur. I've always wanted to pop a Calon on Valentines day, put it on the table and see how long it takes before the label connection is noticed.
