WTN: EdmundsStJohn Syrah Wylie-Fenaughty '03...(short/boring

by TomHill » Wed Jan 16, 2013 10:39 am

Tried this last night after electrifying the kids at Pinon Grade School w/ my Van de Graaff:
1. EdmundsStJohn Syrah Wylie-Fenaughty/ElDoradoCnty (14.2%; www.EdmundsStJohn.com) Intuition&BlandLuck/Berkeley 2003: Med.dark color w/ slight bricking; rather earthy/dusty/ElDorado mushroomy slight pungent/licorice/funky some blackberry/earthy/Syrah slight Rhonish/coffee rather interesting nose; bit tart/angular somewhat earthy/dusty/mushroomy/ElDorado light blackberry/Syrah flavor w/ light tannins; med.long tart/angular slight tannic somewhat earthy/dusty/mushroomy/ElDorado light blackberry/Syrah slight Rhonish/coffee/smokey/pungent finish; not a lot of bright fruit but speaks strongly of ElDoradoCnty Syrah; some like a Rhone/Cornas/rustic; some like a Languedoc Syrah w/o the hard/gritty tannins; quite an interesting/atypical Syrah that I'm not sure will get a whole lot better.

Thanks Tom.

While I really like Steve's 2003 Syrahs, they don't hold a candle to the great 2001s and 2005s for me.

Slightly off-topic: the other day I was discussing some NY chefs with friends, and I kept getting quizical looks when I mentioned Wylie Fenaughty of WD 40. Of course, I meant Wylie Dufresne, but that's not what was coming out of my mouth!

That was just Fenaughty (in my attempts to be a bit wiley with that lineup...) but that was so good. Stupid me for only buying one bottle.

Maybe I did. Would explain why someone started chewing on my arm.
