Wine gifts from Santa?

by David M. Bueker » Thu Dec 27, 2012 4:51 pm

It was a good wine Christmas here, with a copy of the new Wine Grapes tome from Jancis, along with '09 & '10 Beaucastel and '91 Dow. Laura received a Krug Grand Cuvee.

Good deal on the screwcaps. Much better than those oh so reliable corks.

I forgot two items that we received from friends just prior to Christmas - a 2011 J. J. Prum Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese and a 2002 Lallier Champagne.

One of my daughters gave us a wine that someone else had given her. We drank it tonight with lamb shanks and pasta. We managed to keep it down. It was a Yellow Tail Shiraz!

I am pleased to say no wine gifts here. I can hardly open the cellar door what with all the wine that needs to be placed onto the shelves and I certainly don't need another bottle opener no matter how different it is from all the others I have been given over the years.

Our daughter re-gifted us an Arbor Mist. I love her dearly, and it is the thought that counts, but that wine will never see the bottom of my glass.

Also a copy of Robinson's Wine Grapes which is a really excellent book.

Plus a bottle of Shafer Relentless and one of BV Coastal Estates Cabernet Sauvignon, both from employees; perhaps there is a message in those choices!

New York Times wine book, Asimov's book, Krug vintage 2000, 4 bottles 20 year tawny Ferreira. Other goodies not wine related. Overall good year. :D

Got a few nice bottles for Christmas/my birthday, highlights of which were some 2008 La Mission Haut Brion, 2009 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Spatlese and a 1995 Salon (already opened, and utterly delicious. :D)

Got a lot of wine swag this year.

"The Finest Wines of Germany: A Regional Guide to the Best Producers and Their Wines" - Reinhardt
"The Great Domaines of Burgundy: A Guide to the Finest Wine Producers of the Cote d'Or" - Norman

2009 Schug Pinot Noir Carneros. Drunk on Christmas day. Intriguing. Not great. Manure thing holding on in background (not barnyard, manure). Plastic cork.

Riedel Vivant Pinot Noir (stemless). I think I'm the only person I know who prefers stemless.
Barbara Pinot Noir glasses (stemmed)
New decanter of indeterminate origin, which is just as it should be.

I also got "Pale Ale, Revised: History, Brewing, Techniques, Recipes (Classic Beer Style)" by Foster but that's probably not of interest to most here.

Belated happy birthday, Salil! It was the 28th, I believe. Looks like you got some mighty nice gifts!

Cheers!

Wine-related items from a friend in Maryland--wine bag, Santa topper to put over an opened bottle, and a wine chiller bag. I considered buying some wine chiller bags last summer but didn't complete the transaction so I was particularly happy to have that gift. A friend at church passed on some wine tags to put on wine glasses at parties so that everyone can track which is their wine glass. I may gift myself with the Terry Theise book "Reading Between the Wines." I'm also considering gifting myself with a 2010 Clos St. Denis Grand Cru which costs much more than I will usually pay for a single bottle but is something I would like to experience.

It is, ahem, to me! Hope you post a review here once you have the chance to read it over. I haven't encountered that title before.

Lovely wine and better than "better" houses' 20 year, and perhaps for that reason under the radar.
