TNR: 2004 Herzog Generations

Not for four years:

Herzog Generation VIII Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 – Score: A-
The color on this was is a lively ruby red. The nose is filled with chocolate, smoke, black cherry, and oak. The mouth on this full bodied wine is laden with cherries and plums. The chunky tannins have yet to integrate, but the finish is long and smoky and the wine lingers long after it is gone.

Looks like it's an extended age version of the Chalk Hill. I wonder if it's the same grapes or a different parcel. Either way, looks interesting.

I had it about 8 months ago, it was very good but not even close to the filthy 2006. TN-wise, consider David's mine (or almost. Thanks Dave! )

Indeed - this was one of the first Gen 8 wines and that was how they made it, they took the Chalk Hill grapes and aged it longer - and of course doubled the price. Since then they have sourced the grapes from To Kalon and other places, making the price a bit more legitimate - if you are so disposed to such things...

Made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Napa and the Chalk Hill's Warnecke vineyard, oak aged for 23 months in French oak. Showing spicy and toasty oak notes, softly mouth-coating tannins and opening to reveal a fine array of blackberry, currant and red plums, those supported nicely by hints of espresso coffee and vanilla. To Kalon is a big, big vineyard. Lots of new wineries in Napa will get a stab at making a wine with that designation. I know you've tasted both (I haven't) but the name itself wouldn't be a justification, especially since they clearly have dibs on the better plots of Warnecke. That said, I wasn't moved by the 2006 G8 at KFWE last year.
