Tasting right now a very interesting wine by the Gat Shomron Winery in Karnei Shomron, Israel.

This is a blend of their Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2007 and 2009 vintages, they didn't make wine in 2008 due to the shmittah year. The 2007 wine, made from grapes grown at Kerem Ben Zimra in the Galil, was aged in french oak barrels for 34 months (!!!) while the 2009 was aged for 16 months and made from grapes grown in Shiloh in the Shomron. The 2 wines were then blended and aged in the barrels for a few more months.

Gat Shomron, Cabernet Sauvignon 2007/2009: Dark, almost impenetrable garnet, the nose starts off a bit alcoholic but that goes away after a few minutes and some good swirling in the glass to show some rich ripe blackberries and heavy oak, the wine is full-bodied and shows on the palate blackcurrants and rich blackberries, black pepper and oriental spices with the spicy oak in the background and some notes of strong espresso coffee with good acidity and more oak. Packed with mouth-coating, almost chewy tannins with some bit of heat, the finish is very long. If you're afraid of the 'oak monster' this wine is not for you. Otherwise it provides for a very interesting experience. Needs a big juicy steak. :)

Best,

GG

I wish to correct myself here. The Gat Shomron Winery DID make wine in 2008.

No worries, for some reason I think that he will be the one to call me. Advise your buddy (what's his name again?) there.
