WTN: 2007 Joseph Swan Mancini Ranch Zinfandel

by JC (NC) » Fri Nov 23, 2012 11:39 am

Russian River Valley, CA. 14.1% abv. Opened Thanksgiving Day at a church dinner. Half bottle left to consume at home. Deep purple-red color; nearly opaque. Ripe, almost sweet impression on the nose but with refinement. Not over-the-top. Juicy dark berries (winery notes say red fruit--cherries) with a slight tartness on the finish. Smooth drinking. Good with roast turkey and cranberry sauce. A more rustic Zinfandel might pair better with the Cajun fried turkey also available at the church dinner, but spicy is not my thing so I stuck to the roast turkey. I really like this and would rate it 91 or 92 points. I ordered this and some other Joseph Swan wines while visiting the tasting room last August. Just received my order from Scherrer Winery and may open the 2007 Old and Mature Zin to compare with the Joseph Swan.

The better DCV and RRV '07s are drinking really well this year. And Mancini Ranch is ome of my faves.

I think Swan '08 Mancini isn't released yet - at least I got '07 in my latest Club package, and that's what I tasted there.
I've had '08 Zins from other wineries. They're generally a bit tighter and more tannic than the '07s. They'll be good, I think, just take a bit longer.

My mistake - it is 2006 vintage. I'll edit my earlier post.

Ah. I have a couple of bottles, but I haven't opened one yet.
For some reason or other, I don't have many '06 Zins in my cellar, and I have only opened a couple - none of which are from producers having a style similar to Swan.
