Good ole Dom: What's the best one you've had?

by Jeff B » Tue Nov 27, 2012 12:32 am

Many might sneer at this queen of commercial champagne, but I've yet to taste one I didn't like. They are among the most harmonious and balanced of all the champagnes I've had the pleasure to taste.

The finest I've tasted was a 1988 Dom Rose, oh so delicate but balanced by hints of strawberries n cream.

My favorite "blonde Dom" was a 1982.

I've heard that the 96's are already superb but I have not popped the cork on the couple I managed to stash away.

(Pouring a glass of this regal wine for everyone here...)

Only had one - a magnum received as prize for a letter to a magazine. Can't remember vintage.

Only one here too. I was bumped up to first class on a flight and was in uniform. A very nice and obviously wealthy guy sat next to me and insisted on sharing a bottle with me. It was nice but not memorable except for the occasion. No idea the date of the flight or the vintage of the Dom.

Haven't tasted all that many, but considering the 7 or 8 that I have tasted the 96 was my favorite. I don't think they are that good when you factor in the price.

Haven't had that many either, but a 71 or 73 about ten years ago was completely stunning. Can understand Lou re the '96' though, that was a fantabulous year for that wine. Amazing to think that's possible, considering their production.

I would love to taste either one (the '71 or '73). They sound amazing.

1985 Rose

I have never been otherwise particularly impressed with Dom Perignon. I am much more of a Krug fan.

These are 5 Dom Perignons that I can only dream of tasting but, from reading notes, sound aligned to my tastes:

1959
1964
1966
1973
1976
