Sure, I'll always choose Readers (my local hardware store, what they have available in a comparatively small space boggles the mind) over HD if I have a choice- in last 5 years other than Sundays (when Readers is closed) I've probably been to HD three times- twice for LED recessed lights, once for a particular toilet.

But in an unfamiliar market I'd prefer to judge from a variety of choice/sources. My gaydar might not be correct for interior designers or florists :)
Actually I don't find "impeccable taste" translates from the visual to the alimentary. I know of at least 3 friends who have great visual taste, and that is how they judge restaurants. I prefer someone who really cares re food. Plus there is some truth to the reality that taxi drivers, hotel concierges, etc tend to send you to
"friends", and I'd assume florists do the same.

That's why I never ask a concierge for a restaurant reccomendation. The ploy worked well for us twice: in Auckland, NZ, it got us into a great B & B and then into a neighborhood of cool cafes and bistros, and another time it worked out great in Florida. But those were pre-social networking; now, there'd be no need.
