The unbelievable blind tasting of the finest bordeaux wines

Postby Gabriel Geller » Sat Jan 21, 2012 6:41 pm

Hi guys, for those who haven't watched it already, the following video is really interesting: It is a blind tasting of almost all the most famous and priciest 1er Cru of Bordeaux (ranging from 100-1600 euros, $130-2100) by some of the most recognized experts, some of them being even world-famous with the exception of one entry-level wine at 14 Euros. The tasting was held in France in 2009 and features experts from all around the world, although the majority are french. I've been personally numerous times in close contact with almost all the wines tasted there so the least I can say is that the results can be surprising!

I'm dying to see the day when a selection of the best Israeli Bordeaux-blends will be presented to -say, the same- experts in a manner that they wouldn't have a clue what are they tasting or where do the wines come from and see the results!

Best,

GG

What's the fuss? That an Entre-Deux-Mers with a Bordeaux Superieur appellation should produce a wine which, when they themselves put on a tasting, should best some premier cru classifieds? It happens occasionally. Those who wish to pump in money can do just about anything. It's a marketing piece by the chateau. There are many ways to concentrate a wine, now more than ever. Yes, it may be good winemaking, may even be a great property, but more importantly, it's the money the spend to put out a product. The classification of 1855 was produced as real estate valuation. It is recognized that the winemaking enhances or negates the positions of those properties relative to the actual quality of wine produced. Over the course of history, there are many wines which have challenged classified growths, even first growths.

Well Craig, I wasn't personally that surprised, I even expected it! It just reinforced what I've always said and thought about those über-expensive 1er cru, that they are mainly luxury brands, and like many other luxury products, you pay of course for a high-quality manufactured product with a rich history, but also for the brand itself. And like other upscale products, sometimes you may also find a product not luxuriously branded and/or marketed but providing good when not even better quality for money.
