Wow - I missed this thread from Gehenom (hell in Hebrew). Wow, I must be honest I saw the thread heading and I immediately thought of you Mike! Not sure if that is a compliment or not, but it is true. An epikoyres takes a fair amount of knowledge than you probably have, so you may not want to compliment yourself so fast

So, in the end, anyone can think what they want. I have never begrudged Hefe from saying some things or you. That said more kosher options are great for me and many others - period. Other than that yes Mike you say clearly that you buy kosher, but your disdain for kosher is weird to me - period. You have the right to do what you want, as previously stated. I am truly sorry for whatever bad experience(s) you had with kosher athoraties, but as Daniel has said in the past - they are not all so bad. I guess one can either let bygones be bygones or you can just hate on people and or their actions for as long as you like.

Interesting, when a number of gentlemen in black clothes and flowing beards called me an epikoyres in the past I never realized that they were complimenting me... . A revelation apparently opposite to that experienced by the Lone Ranger after retirement -

Reviving this thread because Jay Buchsbaum of Royal Wines just came across the story of Tulip and sent me an email along with his permission to post it.

I read with great interest your blog on this as you know I am observant. And I find nothing wrong with an occasional posting on an issue that is clearly dear to you and the values you hold dear, even in a wine centric forum.

In fact, although not as well followed, I do a spot on wine on the Nachum Segal's radio show (Americas largest Jewish radio program) each week and I am prone on occasion, to speak of issues dear to me that are not necessarily related to wine. So long as its with respect for alternate views. A great saying to live by is "say what you mean and mean what you say, but don't say it mean".

Two final points on this; First its clear that Tulips willingness to involve this very special community stops short of anything that would seriously compromise the quality of the wine, while at the same time making allowances to involve this group as much as possible.

Its heartening to see that the Rabbinic authorities, (as Tulip's ownership) would refuse to compromise on their standards and values, yet, has, as you mention in your email, made allowances that keeps this group doing 80+% of the tasks previously assigned to this very special group.

Its wonderful to see that in the end the religious and the secular can come together in such a wonderful way on such and important human issue. May this be a microcosm and template for all of us in the Jewish community.
