SWR: How rank can we get?

by Robin Garr » Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:33 am

In terms of forum "rank," that is, those silly categories that appear on the left-hand side of your forum posts along with your name and location.

The ranking system came with the PhpBB2 software and we decided to keep it, assigning a series of (slightly) humorous rank levels depending on the number of posts:

Code: Select all
Just got here    0
Cellar rat       5
Wine geek       20
Über geek      100
Wine guru      500

Now, however, we've got a couple of folks who've passed the 1,000 point and quite a few more on the way, so we need to add another rank. I've discarded "Wine windbag" and "pompous bore," but would welcome suggestions for something funny and appropriate to define the next level, and maybe even the level after that, just to give folks something to shoot for.

Nominations, please!

I guess Wine Weenie is out too? I don't know if it matters as we can choose our own if we want to. I just haven't given it much thought. Although we don't want anything too pompous.

I have no problem being described as pompous or a windbag myself as all too often the description probabbly fits. I suspect there are a lot of good ideas out there.

I won't rule it out entirely, but it's right down there with Logorrheic Lush on my priority list ...

And should 20 000 be Blue Nun here as well ;) Maybe reserve part of the furniture (I like this!!!) for 30 000?

An alternative modest proposal ...

by Robin Garr » Sat Sep 23, 2006 4:04 pm

Lots of good ideas here, and lots of silly ones. I won't comment about which are which. :D

Now I've got an out-of-the-box idea: Rather than continuing the rank levels until they get stupid, maybe when forumites hit a specified point - and 1,000 posts might work - they get to choose their own personal "rank." I won't retroactively make the Musaraholic or the Cellar Cat go back and wait, but in the future that might be a good incentive to folks to participate regularly.

In line with what Joe P nominated
I suggest a maenad or bacchante for women
And a satyr or bacchant for men

Silly? That would be if I gave out Sumerian names like: ğeštindug (good wine) for 1000, ğeštinanna (wine from heaven) for 10 000 etc....

ğ is supposed to be the letter g with a tilde over it. I guess the software can't handle that. So much for my silly idea! ;)

How about a 1,000 one gets a decoder ring. That would make James happy. 8)

Yes it would! Why do you think I make all these inane comments?

Living near DC I also thought of "Wine Wonk".

Along Joe P.'s lines you could have Dionysian Devotee or High Priest of Dionysius, etc... Iknow the Romans had a cult to Dionysius but I don't know more than that. I think it had some naghty fertility rights associated with it. Maybe that was the Greeks and Bacchus. It all gets confusing as they are basically the same.

Did RG make a decision on this? There was a lot of good natured input here. I'm still supporting the decoder ring idea.
