Yarden Brut NV?

Postby Andrew Breskin » Tue Feb 23, 2010 5:55 pm

Daniel, in your 2010 GHW tasting notes you mention the Yarden BdB and a Gamla label NV Brut. Isn't there a Yarden NV Brut? If so, what is the review? Thanks in advance.

Andrew, Hi....

When the Golan Heights Winery first released their Blanc de Blancs it was non vintage but since 1994 the wine has indeed been a vintage wine. The Gamla Brut was also a non-vitage wine when first released a year ago but the new release is also a vintage wine, in this case 2007.

I don't know how you derived that from my above post but indeed there is not now a n.v. Yarden Brut. I believe the wine you ask about was produced between 1999 and 2001. The last release of a wine by that name was in 2001 and I tasted it last in 2003. My tasting note follows. Since then, however, the Yarden sparkling wines have all been vintage wines.

Best Rogov

Golan Heights Winery, Brut, Yarden, n.v.: As always, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, made in the Champenoise method and as always, a delightful sparkling wine with sharp, long lasting buggles, an appealing lightly yeasty sense that runs throughout the citrus and white peach fruits. Rich and mouthfilling, a good choice on its own, with nothing more than strawberries or as a match to food. Score 89. (Most recently tasted 26 Sep 2003)

Thanks for the link. Looks like I reviewed that bottle three years ago! If I didn't like it so much then, probably hasn't gotten any better.

Checked with the winery today. As stated above, the Yarden Brut was discontinued at at least 9 years ago.

I would say maybe, depending on how late of a release it is, and how it was stored. But, the 2005 Blancs de Blanc is now available in the US.

Given that the 2000 vintage is on the far side of it's peak (while still drinkable at least as of 6 weeks ago), I doubt the n.v. has much life left on it, but why not give it a shot. Be sure to report back.

I last drank this wine about a year and a half ago. At that time it was better than you might expect but definitely not worth seeking out. I can't find my notes but it had a very short-lived mousse and gave little pleasure although there was some life in it as long as you drank it fairly quickly before all the fizz was gone.

Wow - I disagree. I just had a glass or two of this last night and it was very bright with nice peach, green apple, citrus and lovely small mousse. Hey, I am not going to look for this stuff, but it was not bad - sorry!

WOW!! Either you got a good bottle or I got a bad one. Anyway I distinctly remember this one turning flat rather quickly but being OK until then. In any event that is some impressive longevity for this NV brut.

Indeed and it is being sold here still, which is an abomination if it is truly 10 or 11 years old!
