When is a Sauvignon Blanc an offbeat white?

When it is a Sauvignon de St Bris

Simmonnet Sauvignon de Saint Bris 2007 Aprox $13

Imagine a Sauvignon Blanc with little grass and medium citrus, with all the gravel and minerals of Chablis. That's what this wine is like!

St Bris is absolutely a Bourgogne Appellation, but it is the only one in Burgundy that is SB. Simmonnet is now a part of the Louis Latour group and is a faairly well respected Chablis producer. Wwll worth looking for.

Sounds quite interesting; certainly wouldn't mind trying that.

I like Sauvignon Blanc when it doesn't taste like standard Sauvignon Blanc - have had a couple more interesting ones from Lawson's Dry Hills in NZ that saw a bit of oak (possibly lees?) aging and showed a lot more depth and character than the standard grapefruit-and-grass SBs.
Might be biting on a couple of the SB offerings from my Scholium Project mailer (hear those wines have a ton of skin contact and some time in oak, heck given that it's Scholium those should certainly be offbeat).

Tad off-topic but still SB. New WS has a piece on California SB (page 52) and lists the Peter Michael Sonoma Co as a Top Wine. $4. Very fair price eh!!!!
