WTN: my first 2005

Robert Weil Riesling QbA trocken 2005, was given to me for christmas. Clearly, Mr. Weil is in a rush to sell his sizable production, and the wine shows why. Simple but pleasant fruit up-front (mirabelle), the balance is nicely judged with fruit enhancing RS below the thershold where trocken-drinkes will be offended. There is no mineral depth, no length, no real sense of terroir caracter, and no future beyond the first year though, fo all I can see.

Hi Peter, good to see you here.

To judge from the prices here, Weil is one of those folks who easily sells all he makes. His QbAs are the most expensive at Dee Vine, I think. Thanks for the note, it sounds like an interesting wine, even if disappointing.

I tasted a number of 2005s the other day. Some were quite good, but none had "vintage of the century" stamped on them.
There behind the glass lies a real blade of grass. Be careful as you pass. Move along. Move along.

David,
I don't mean to be critical of 2005 here in any way. I have tasted some stuff drom barrel in Rheinhessen, which was extremely good (dry wines, and not overblows declassified BA at all). I will have mor data points by tomorrow on Saar and Ruwer, which promise to be specatular.

I do. Early returns are nowhere near the 2001 level for me. Actually that's good, as I have zero cellar space.

My son was born in '05, and we both spent a good deal of time in Germany last year, so I'm hoping that the vintage turns up some winners. I was happy to hear that many sites developed good botrytis, and have heard nothing but positive remarks about the harvest. I haven't tasted any yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

In what way?

The shorthand I'm hearing for 05 is '03 with acid' - which sounds something like 01, although perhaps more sugar?

So far the 2005s I have had do not have the depth of flavor of the 2001s. Of course all I have had are QbA-Spatlese, but that's the stuff I like best anyway, so if 2005 is a vintage for auslese+ then I m not all that interested anyway.

Ok, I can see that, and makes sense from the weather patterns.. AM still excited/curious to taste, but perhaps with more Guarded Enthousiasm

Remember that the various regions can show significant variation. What I tasted at the Saar knocks the socks off 2001.
