I'm fortunate to be traveling in Costa Rica right now and I'm in food heaven. Currently in Grecia and found this restaurant highly recommended on the interwebs. Rancho de Nelson about 6 blocks southwest of the Central Park.
Open air, tin roof and muy bueno. The guacamole was sublime, the Arroz a la Marinera (rice with mixed seafood) was incredible and plentiful. Y con dos cervezas the bill was 5,885 colones. Less than $12!!! I’m stuffed.

That looks great! When I was in Costa Rica, we never really ran across anything like that. We seemed to get a lot of fairly generic plates of rice/beans/plantains with not much to distinguish them. The tropical fruit we bought from roadside vendors was probably the best food we had there. This was 20 years ago, though, and I didn't work very hard to try to find good restaurants.

Yum. Haven't been to Costa Rica, and I really want to. My gay brother's ex-first love lives there with his husband and runs a B & B--we'd have free room and board, and I hear Carlos is a super fantastic cook. What am I waiting for?

Yes, what ARE you waiting for? Just amazing. Do you know offhand where the B&B is located? Had lunch a few hours ago with another internet friend met on a CR forum much like this one. A small but wonderfully fresh fish filet served on a tortilla with potatoes sautéed with garlic and a wonderful small super fresh salad. With a cerveza it was about 6 bucks!

We had a fantastic rice dish, a bit like arroz con pollo, in a little restaurant on the border with Nicaragua. My wife makes it now, using achiote to color the rice (that was their method), and adds pigeon peas to the mix and a few fresh green beans or asparagus, in season. We don't usually add chicken, but it goes great as a side with chicken, fish, carne asada, even tamales.
Oh, some fried ripe plantains go perfectly alongside.
