Taken from a menu, Poland: SALAD A FIRM'S OWN MAKE;
LIMPID RED BEET SOUP WITH CHEESY DUMPLINGS IN THE
FORM OF A FINGER; ROASTED DUCK LET LOOSE; BEEF
RASHERS BEATEN UP IN THE COUNTRY PEOPLE'S FASHION.

I'd love to know what the starting point on that one was before they submitted it to Babelfish or equivalent.....

Are you sure that was Poland and not Kazakhstan? [high five!]

This example is in Lederer's Anguished English, a lovely and greatly amusing collection of similar translations. There are too many great example to quote just one.

Thanks for reminding me, Bill. I've read the book several times, and had forgotten it. I need a laugh today. :)

I'd venture that "Roasted Duck Let Loose" is a Free Range Duck? The salad is...homemade?...maybe.

Could well be, Richard.

My mind boggled right after picturing a kitchen full of Poles beating their rashers......

The Cheese Dumplings would probably be Pierozki (perogies).

The "finger shaped" is what throws me.

I think they mean hand or home made, Stuart.

BTW, Leslie, pierozki are baked, perogies are boiled. Same thing before cooking.

Hah, of course! That shows what happens when my mind goes down a path and doesn't look left or right!

Unfortunately, I now have a jones for some pierogi...

Janet and I went to Poland and asked everywhere for the "real" pierogi -- a highlight of Polish cooking in our world. Couldn't find it anywhere except a beer joint catering to students from around the world.

We were told no Pole would ever pay for pierogi in a restaurant -- it was too common at home or in stores -- restaurant food was fancier.

So, when it appeared on a menu, it was always tarted up somehow.
