Back on the west coast of Ireland I went to Sol y Sombra, a tapas bar and restaurant in Killorglin, at the eastern end of the Ring of Kerry. The bar is actually in a converted church up a slope. The 2 owners from Madrid were behind the bar. We had a chat ( charlabamos ) in Spanish. On the specials board I saw fresh haddock with onion confit, baby potatoes and grilled vegetables. I ordered this with a glass of the black stuff, the wines being too expensive marked up with Irish alcohol duty. The portion size looked good but the fish came saturated in some sort of confit and butter sauce and the potatoes were slightly on the hard side. It was pleasant enough but the cooking was heavy handed. Nice enough place, unusual setting, but I would try something else on the menu next time.
On to the Killarney Park hotel in the centre of Killarney. The food in the Garden Bar here is top notch. Toasted brioche with poached egg in sherry vinegar on top of a portobello mushroom. Phallic maybe, but good stuff. The tempura of cod ( fried fish to you and me ) with mushy peas and chips was also cooked very well. Worth a visit again.
