Wow, John, that is good news. Just anecdotally, I've always had the feeling that it was so. A bit of vino, good company, good food, good cheer - it can't help but make us all happy.

I found this to be very interesting .


This isn't totally new. An article appeared in Nature two years ago that showed the role of resveratrol in stimulating some enzymes (sirtuins) that had previously been implicated in the well-known effect of calorie-restricted diets on longevity. In fact, the researcher who published that Nature article and a former postdoc of his have both formed startup biotech companies looking for ways to create a "fountain of youth" drug. Of course not, but people who don't drink wine might take the pill.

There are also other beneficial phytochemicals in wine, most notably the isoflavonoids. In addition, alcohol consumption has been linked to decreased incidence of heart disease, so Paul of Tarsus had it right all along :wink:
