WTN: Wines last week and Easter

by Dale Williams » Mon Apr 01, 2024 2:15 pm

Miso salmon, asparagus, rice with furikake, salad
2022 JP Brun “L’Ancien” Beaujolais VV
Fresh, cranberries and raspberry, very floral, Fun B/B+

No wine with “Marry Me Chicken” (a bit like a spicy stroganoff)

I had planned on a quick veal stew, but store was out of veal, so it ended up as a pork/mushroom/onion/pea stew, with broccoli rabe.
1990 Monte-Vannos Ribera de Duero Reserva
The fruit had lived, but buried under a wall of wood that still hadn’t integrated. C/C+

Cooking wine was the 2015 Rolet Arbois Chardonnay. Better than the dinner wine, clean pear and slate, just a touch of oxidation, drink up. B-

Tofu/vegetable rice bowls with a spicy peanut sauce
2012 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Kabinett
Lovely showing, citrus and cherry, floral, zippy, long and precise. A-

Oysters, grey sole meuniere, spinach, rice
2019 Pepiere “Ch. Thebaud” Muscadet
Rich, ripe, young, delicious but could use some time to unwind. B+/B

Easter we did a ham, cold poached salmon with a dill/cream/mustard sauce, roasted garlic potatoes, asparagus vinaigrette. Others brought deviled eggs, green salad, broccoli rabe, chocolate cake, and a raspberry roll.

NV Piper-Heidsieck Sauvage Rose Champagne
Competent, straightforward, red fruit with orange zest and toast. Fine but not something to seek out. B

2001 Chezeau (Ponsot) Griottes-Chambertin
This had some browning on the rims, not very vibrant, ripe cherry and pomegranate. Maybe just shut down, but a Winebid bottle and expect it saw some warm storage. B-/C+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I don't drink a lot of JP Brun, but had the 2022 Cote de Brouilly this weekend and wasn't expecting a whole lot, as it's not Prestige Beaujolais. But it was so good and so perfect. I don't give grades, but probably would have been something closer to B+/A- for the joy factor!

I am glad I am not the only one enthusing over a 2012 German Riesling.
