My French is pretty awkward, so I hope somebody with a little better command of the language will come along, but just to keep the thread alive, it's either MoN-boo-kay or maybe MoN-boo-skay ... that liaison thingie tends to make usually not-pronounced consonants show up, but I'm not sure whether it works here.

Hi Bill,

It's Mon-Boo-Skey. I hope my phonetic spelling is right.
Best, Eve

Robin, what's the significance of your capitalizing the 'N' in the syllable 'MoN'?

Eve--you're sure handy to have around. :) I am now desperately trying to think of a French wine name that stumped us a few weeks ago, but failing. It was similar to this in that we were pronouncing an 's' or something in an interior syllable that we would not have pronounced had it been on the end of the word. But we didn't really know we were doing that. If it comes to me, I'll return to this thread and ask.

Eve had it right, but just one thing...you don't pronounce the 'n' in 'Mon'. It had a sort of silent nasal quality, somewhat like the n in Monkey and the o is pronounced like 'on'. Come to think of it, say 'on' but don't finish up with the 'n' sound and you should be there.

I hope this helps.

Simon :D

Berry Bros. and Rudd has a very useful Wine Pronunciation Guide to Bordeaux wineries. The list wouldn't have helped with Monbousquet, but it can be very useful:

Actually the bbr site also provides pronunciations for wines not on the list. Search for Monbousquet and click on the little speaker icon next to the wine: http://www.bbr.com/sounds/producers/3513.wav
