WTN: Five Falanghinas...(short/very boring)

by TomHill » Fri Jan 26, 2024 3:42 pm

We tasted Wed at Pig+Fig some Falanghinas:
1.Arnot-Roberts Falanghina Handal-Denier Vnyd/DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty (12.5%; 4 brls) Arnot-Roberts/Healdsburg 2016: Light gold color; light slightly floral/carnations/Falan slight appley/pear bit earthy pleasant slightly complex nose; very tart/tangy light floral/carnations/Falan bit stony/earthy rather lean/eviscerated near vapid flavor; med. finish that mirrors flavor; speaks lightly of Falan but the A-R rather lean/eviscerated style overrides anything of interest.

2.Ridge Falanghina AlderSpringsVnyd/Mendocino (13.2%; 2% picpoul; 9 brls; bttld Feb 2020; Drk: 12/19-12/21: JO) 2019: Med.gold color; very perfumed floral/carnations/Falan bit ripe/pineapple light pencilly/oak slight appley/pear/earthy quite attractive nose; lightly tart bit lightweight (for Ridge) some floral/carnations/Falan appley/pineapple/ripe bit pencilly bit complex flavor; very long bit lightweight floral/carnations finish that mirrors flavor; quite a pleasant expression of Falan but resembles Roussanne quite a lot; best Falan I ever recall having.

3. Matthiasson Falanghina LostSloughVnyd/Clarksburg (13.0%) Napa 2021: Light yellow color; some earthy/stony light appley light floral/carnations/perfumed talc pleasant enough nose; lightly tart/tangy some appley rather simple near vapid flavor; med.short light earthy/stony finish; a pretty lightweight near vapid white w/ little character; not a very interesting wine & too close to being vapid.

4. Feudi di SanGregorio Dd'OC: Falanghina del Sannio (13%; TerlatoWines/LakeBluff/IL) Sorbo Serpico 2021: Light yellow color; some earthy/stony light appley light floral/carnations/perfumed talc pleasant/simple nose; lightly tart/tangy some appley/stony simple/rather vapid flavor; med.short bit stony finish that mimics flavor; a pretty lightweight near vapid white w/ little distinguishing character.

More likklesprit from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. So much for Falanghina. All were pretty undistinguished wines w/ not a whole lot of character. The Ridge was clearly the best of a pretty sorry lot but not in the league of their Grenache Blanc, for example. When you make it in the A-R or Matthiasson style, it just doesn't deliver a whole lot of character.
