Not a tasting note ... a forum note :)

by Robin Garr » Mon Jan 15, 2024 5:04 pm

Just testing ... are any of you finding the forum either slow, unresponsive, or even unavailable lately? There seems to be something going on, but it's sporadic and apparently regional - affecting some but not others. Since we have a single server at a single site, that kind of rules out a forum bug that only affects some people. But we'd still like to get a broader check. How's it going for you?

Fine the last couple days, but sometime late last week I believe I had some timeouts/Unavailable. But didn't last long.

I got in fine just now, Robin, and response time is better now than it was earlier but still a little hesitant.

Just got back in after 90 minutes of “site not found” errors.

I got that same response several times this morning on a sporadic basis. But relinked and things were fine.

It's really hard to get in here via FB. I used to keep the tab up on my browser (Chrome), but that hasn't worked recently.
This morning I had to go back to FB and it took minutes (not seconds) to get logged in.
It almost makes me long for Compuserve!

I experienced some sluggish response yesterday (Monday Jan. 15). Things seem fine today. I agree that it's highly unlikely to be a problem with the WLDG software or its server. Some routing problem or congestion in the internet backbone is my guess.

I got some site not found messages yesterday when I first tried connecting. It's been slow ever since.

John, logging in by Facebook is not a good idea. Meta broke that process a long time ago. I'm amazed that you can do it at all!

I hate it when that happens. I've gotten in touch with our provider and asked them to look at everything including recent logs and see what they can figure out.

I just got a SQL service error when trying to reply to this topic. The error is:

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Too many connections [1040]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.

So you definitely have a problem on your server.

Denial-of-service attack, perhaps?

I've gotten the same SQL error as Paul several times, as well as a general timeout "This site can’t be reachedforums.wineloverspage.com refused to connect."
I'll also notice that I've needed to login several times in last few days, although I have auto login setup.
Twas a struggle to post a TN.
Sorry you have to deal with this, hopefully provider can figure out.

As David said, it's pretty smooth this morning ... actually quite snappy for me. Our provider has "opened a ticket" on the issue, but I haven't heard back yet. I'll reach out to them shortly and see what I can find out.

Paul, we don't seem like an obvious candidate for a denial-of-service attack, and the techs don't see any obvious signs of that. Ya never know, though! Maybe I irritated some code jockey on social media.

The "have to log in each time" problem can happen if the message sending your login cookie information to the WLDG server doesn't get through.

For sure it seems awfully unlikely that anyone would launch a DDOS attack on WLDG. But we could be seeing the side effects of such an attack on another client sharing the same server hardware as WLDG.

It's fine right now (nearly noon).

Still fine for me too, Paul. I did just get this note from the team in Melbourne (Florida, not Australia) where our servers are located:

I will see what I can find for you today, or at least try and minimize the impacts.
