WTN: Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Aszu Essencia 1993

Extremely dark. Viscous, syrupy. Curiously, not a great deal of aroma, but wonderful flavor. Dates, raisins, figs, Christmas pudding. Tremendous sweetness balanced by a strong, sharp acidity which makes it very easy to drink a lot. Silky smooth. Powerful enough to stand up to a dessert of lebkuchen and stollen. Lots of sediment. Beautiful wine.

Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Nice. I have only once had a chance to try a wine like this.

Aszu Essencia can be wonderful, but a little goes a long way. I bought a bottle of true, unblended Essencia once (I think it was from Royal Tokaji but I'm not sure). Too much of a good thing, that. Like drinking pancake syrup.

I've had pure Essencia twice. One 500 ml bottle was good for over 20 people.
