WTN: Cruzing is made for love

by David M. Bueker » Wed Feb 15, 2023 8:49 pm

2017 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (2/15/2023)
Two hours in the decanter and then back into the bottle, an extra hour would have been better. Once it got to the three hour mark the aromatics expanded from an amorphous wave of fruit to encompass earthy, floral and savory elements. The flavors similarly expanded, and rose up on a wave of acidity to wash of per the palate. Not a lot of tannic structure, but enough on the back end to keep everything in line. Red fruit, flowers and an herbal note linger on the finish. This is a pretty spectacular wine. It’s clearly Rhys and Horseshoe.

It’s Smoky. Line from Cruisin’

And yeah - the wine was great. Horseshoe is my favorite from Rhys…of the Pinots.

Not so different from the 500 ml bottle I opened in 2023, except that it opened up a little quicker, and did develop some loamy/earthy character on the finish that I really enjoyed. It’s definitely a California wine, but the story is about the dirt.
