Looking for a Nice Wine Shop - Salem NH

I am new to the board and I am looking for a good place to buy some vino. Does anybody know a good local shop to pick up wine up here in Salem NH? Otherwise, I guess the local NH Liquor store will just have to do. Is it better to buy online? Any advice would be quite helpful.

Hi Joe and welcome to WLDG and to New Hampshire.

First of all be assured that not all NH Liq Stores were created or run equally. You can check out what is available where at: http://www.nh.gov/liquor/index.shtml Just guessing but the two on I-95 in Hampton may be better than what you have locally.

In Portsmouth I like Ceres Street Wine Merchants, and Corks & Curds LLC in Commercial Ally.

Paul W. who posts here and my brother Peter who lives in Bennington both shop at a place in Nashua. Hopefully, Paul will fill you in.

Lastly, there is a wealth of wine of be found in MA just a few miles south of you. Like NH, MA does not tax wine at the retail level, so you pay the price that's on the bottle.

Some of the New Hampshire State Liquor Stores beare the additional designation "Wine Specialty Shop". There's a very good one off of exit 6 on Rte 3 in Nashua. I don't know if that's the nearest one to Salem.

You're not far from the greater Boston area, which has several good wine shops.

One of these times when I visit my sister in York Beach, ME, I'm going to have to make enough time to get together with some of you folks for an off-line. York Beach is only about 15 minutes from Portsmouth.

Bring some more of that unoaked Chardonnay and I'm sure we'll all be there

Joe, welcome to the board. The Salem NH store does get some of the "wine clearance" bottles (which can either mean a decent price or a cooked wine) and occassionally gets a good supply of interesting new items. I just noticed that a new butcher shop on Rt28 (across from Chili's) sells wine but I havent been in there yet.

Bill this is a nice min-chain that includes one near us in Dover. There is a one of a kind market of the same ilk in Raymond called Freetown Yankee Market that is even better. They also have a small but well chosen selection of wines and a bigger selection of brews. Could be the best sandwiches in NH. They are still open, but are going through a significant expansion at this time.

I'd also like to welcome long-time lurker Joe Armano to the board.

I think what Joe needs is an offline or jeebus to establish what he likes, therefore what he should buy.

Poor mr. Armano, that means he has the dubious duty of keeping both the groom and himself relatively sober prior to the ceremony. Afterwards, all bets are off. I am sure he will manage this difficult job with the same class and dignity that all constantly surrounds our Mr. Perry.

Found out from my brother that the wine shop in Nashua that he buys mucho vino from is the Wine Cellar, at 650 Amherst St # 9. Haven't been there myself, but he is a happy wino with a 500 bottle cellar.

If you find yourself wandering south of the border, consider stopping in at Marty's Fine Wines in Newton, Massachusetts. My old boss Tom Schmeisser is still on the scene, and you could do a lot worse than pick his capacious brain. Marty's is one of the largest wine retailers in New England. A note of caution: While Mr. Schmeisser is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, the store is not "a nice wine shop." It's atmosphere is more like a down-at-the-heels K-Mart on amphetamines. At least that's how I remember the place.

That's the place in Greystone Plaza on 101A in north Nashua, right? I've driven by it many a time, but never stopped inside.

Yeah, but you get a narrow and skewed view of wine... like learning Quantum Mechanics and Game Theory before learning how to read and write.
