Haag & screwcaps

by Graeme Gee » Tue Jan 02, 2007 1:03 am

Saw the strangest thing in a Sydney botleshop the other day. I know even German riesling makers haven't been all that quick to embrace screwcaps, despite the encouragement of their Australian cousins, but this one really stumped me:

2005 Fritz Haag Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Kabinett - screwcap
2005 Fritz Haag Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Spätlese - cork

What the.... ?
cheers,
Graeme

Not an uncommon way that Germans are testing the waters. Selbach-Oster is using screwcaps on their kabinetts as well.

Fritz Hasselbach from Gunderloch started the same way. When I asked him at Vinexpo 2003, he was bottling QbA/Kabinett under screwcaps, Berenauslese and TBA under cork, Spätlese and Auslese under both.

It will take a little time that Haag will fully convert.

In the meantime, stick to Nigl, Hirsch and the like ...

It's no big deal. We'd been selling Anton Bauer gruner veltliners of various quality and prices with corks, and then one day we got a shipment with screwcaps. Then, just to make sure we were paying attention, they changed the capsule color from off-white to charcoal. Go figure.

Hmmm. Is this a 'testing' of the commercial ramifications? Or are they hedging their bets on technical performance? I didn't realise the success of the screwcap is dependent on the amount of residual sugar in the wine. Sheesh!

Graeme, It has more to do with ageing potential than RS. Many German producers are now switching over to screw-cap for wines to be consumed in the shorter-term. Many people still have reservations regarding long-term ageing under cap as there is not yet a proven track record.
