Summer Intermezzo!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Sun Aug 24, 2014 3:12 am

Stand-up tasting downtown, 50 very social participants who enjoyed the food and wine.

Reception wine was the NV Feudi di San Gregorio Sparkling Falanghina ($45). Way over-priced, floral, stone fruits, so-so finish, did not seem to be that popular.
3 whites, best for many was the 2012 Pieropan Soave Calvarino ($35). Off dry, medium bodied, very good finish indeed. Intense nose, apple, herbs.
A Glen Carlou Quartz Stone Chardonnay was eagerly anticipated. Ginger, pineapple, creamy, peach, citrus..plenty of oh hum in the store ($33). Next was a good "wedding wine" (not my quote). 2012 Il Feuduccio Cerasuolo Rose, Abruzzi. Cherry, almond, smooth but no real structure. Should have had one from Provence!

4 reds were offered, but 2 very new world in style (guess which ones!). 2008 Abbazia Santa Anastasia Passamaggio...30% merlot, 70% Nero d`Avola. Nothing exceptional, I was busy serving sausage selection and cheese. Next was the `11 Undurraga TH Carignan, Chile. $28, earthy, cherry, floral, gd acidity, ripe. I have 2 in the cellar, any offers?
Another big red came next, `11 Dominio de Pingus Ribera del Duero. Berry, chocolate, perfume, spice, black fruits, blueberry, violets. Flew off the shelf, gotta love these "new world' style red lovers. $48.

Store co-owner then presented the 2000 Pontet Canet as a surprise. Back to reality but not sure many in the room were expecting an offering like this. Still a good life ahead but drinking well now. 3 hr decant, leather, forest, tobacco, dark fruits, tannic. Lucky us eh.

Everyone seemed to have a great time! Many regular customers, tasting only cost $30 Cdn!!
