WTN: Yalumba "Y Series" Shiraz-Viognier 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Dec 12, 2006 7:08 pm

From South Australia.

No indication, either on the label or on the Yalumba web site, about the proportions of the two grapes.

This is probably only the second Shiraz-Viognier I have had, so take the tasting note below with a grain of salt.

Dark, almost black, in the glass.

Some spice on the nose.

Floral, sort of peachy, spicy, rather subdued cherry-raspberry fruit, red licorice, high acidity, Christmas cake spice and fruit peel. Reminds me of those fruit cocktails you can buy in those little cans.

The addition of Viognier, IMHO, completely changes the flavour profile and markers that I usually look for-associate with Shiraz. Not sure what I would have guessed if I had tried this wine blind.

Interesting, but I don't think I would purchase this again. Purchased at $14 Canadian.

I've not had the Y series but the Hand Picked ´04 Shiraz-Viognier is very good if it is the style you like. I got it mixed up with the Grange in a half-blind tasting (as did all the others in the tasting BTW).
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.
