Hot day, hamburger and Carignan(e)

by John Treder » Wed May 14, 2014 10:35 pm

I dunno whether the terminal "e" is required or optional. It's certainly a matter of taste on wine bottles.
The Giants beat the Braves, it was mid or upper 90s here in Santa Rosa, and I had planned ahead, so I had a hamburger and a strawberry ice cream sundae for dessert.
With the last of my homemade strawberry ice cream.
With the burger, I opened my last bottle of David Coffaro Carignan (he's not an "e" guy) 2008. Quite remarkable. Light texture, nice blackberry/raspberry fruit, just a bit of earthiness, very smooth. Very good, medium length, even finish. It's hard to find a better burger match.
It's screwcapped, and my wild-hair estimate is that it would have attained this degree of maturity in about 2012 had Dave been using Portuguese oak bark.
Nasty details: $15 on futures, 14.8% alcohol, 223 cases

Nice! I like Carignan, no matter how it is spelled.

As a Zinaholic, I like Carignan and Barbera, too.
I wonder why...
