When to Drink Edmunds St John Wines?

by Brian K Miller » Mon Dec 11, 2006 2:53 am

Based on rave reviews from many here, I snagged a modestly priced 2003 Rocks and Gravel at The Girl and the Fig, an awesome deli/wine shop/tourist boutique on the very eastern edge of Sonoma town.

Are these wines meant to be drunk "now" or preferrably put down a few years? There is a dinner next week that I could bring it to.

I had a bottle of this in the spring that was drinking wonderfully, perfectly resolved and in a lovely place. So I would say you should have no worries about opening this now.

Somebody else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe generally speaking the Los Robles Viejos is the longer-ager of the ESJ red blends, so while I'm sure this RAG won't fall apart anytime soon, it doesn't necessarily cry out for the same type of aging.

Enjoy.

Let us know how it is.

One of hte beauties of ESJ wines is that they can be drunk with great pleasure now or later. I've had good luck aging the R&G a few years, but there's no need to do so.

Steve could make comments on individual bottlings but IMO ESJ should be aged. It ages gracefully and fills in any missing pieces. Have had a 10 year old one and it was excellent. I treat them like I would most Rhone wines. The syrah based wines age like N Rhone.

He suggested "now" would be fine. I will report back. :)
