WTN: Killer Muscat Passito...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Apr 13, 2014 9:30 pm

Managed Fri to get Susan to eat a (petite) dessert, so we tried:
1. Dusinberre MuscatCanelli NapaVlly LateHrvst Tesoro del Sole (SaH: 41.0 Brix; RS: 18%; 14.2%; www.WineCal.com) JeffSmith 2004: Deep gold color; very intense orangey/muscatty/very passito-like slight alcoholic beautiful/intense/honeyed nose; very intense muscatty/passito/orangey/floral/honeyed very sweet very slight alcoholic beautiful flavor; very long/lingering quite sweet balanced/not cloying very intense muscatty/orangey/floral/honeyed clean/bright beautiful finish; a stunning passito at a stupid/silly price. $21.70/hlf (BB)

1. I stumbled upon this hlf btl at BottleBarn on my recent foray out there, bought it to try in my motel room, but didn't get around to it. So schlepped it back home and cracked it Fri w/ low expectations. Whatta surprise. Probably the best passito I've ever had from Calif. As best I could tell, there was no botrytis involved in these grapes. I can only recall one or two Muscat de Pantelleria passitos that are this good.
Not familiar w/ JeffSmith. I gather he's on the winemaking team at Hourglass up in Calistoga. If this is an example of what he can do...I'm mightly impressed.
This is exactly the kind of wine they should be making all over Calif wherever Muscat (or Orange Muscat) is grown. Alas, passito is a sadly neglected genre in Calif.
