What to put on a TV in a wine/beer retail shop.

by Jon Peterson » Tue Apr 01, 2014 11:00 am

Advice/Recommendations please:
The wine shop I'm involved with is set to open on or about May 11th. The owner has two screens on which he wants to show wine/beer related informational videos. Are there any such videos in the public domain that he could use, if anyone knows? In the alternative, does anyone know of a source for inexpensive informational videos on beer or wine?

It's VHS only, and might be getting a little dated, but I'd still speak up for Hugh Johnson's "Vintage: The story of wine," a four-tape series that's informative and fun for beginners and geeks alike. It appears that some folks are offering used sets for $22 and up via Amazon.com:

Yeah, but....

I'll bet the copyright on that video states it's for private viewing only, no public showing etc.

I have to wonder if anyone is going to watch these? I can't imagine ever going into a wine/beer store and standing there for 5, 10, 20, 30 minutes and watching a video.

You may actually be better off having sports on there!

Won't big companies like inBev, Mondavi, etc. have videos that they'll give you? Or maybe that's not what you want.

It looks like National Geographic has some nice wine related videos.

In the shop where I used to work, no one watch the videos. But, I was asked to look into this and I did.
Thanks.

There is a local show, hosted by Kevin LoVullo, whom I've met at a few tastings. It is also shown in Cleveland. I don't know it there is anything like this in your area.

Use a wifi hook up and show wine related videos from the web.

At the far back wall in our store we have a large flat screen TV. When it is on the focus is sports, infrequently the food channel. We try to maintain a local approach SC, UCLA, Dodgers, Angels, etc. Tennis,& golf are popular. Our experience has been that 99% of people stop long enough in front of the tv to check the score. Any program that takes time to watch just doesn't have an attraction. The employees at the store are sports minded so customers will chat with them for a few moments about their teams and check the scores.

I recall that Cameron Hughes has a lot of videos of their different wines that I saw streaming in one retail store and they are done quite well. Many retailers carry these wine so if you do that might be an option.

But that's advertising, not education. I, as a customer, would not enjoy that, and were I a competing distributor I'd resent it. You wouldn't?
