WTN: We bust our stones for you

by David M. Bueker » Fri Mar 28, 2014 7:44 am

The following wine was served blind to our tasting group last night. The tasting ntoe below is not recommended for children, the elderly or anyone with a compromised immune system.

2008 Saxum Broken Stones
What new devilry is this? RUN!!! I would honestly rather face the Balrog of Moria than drink this wine. I am not even sure it can be called wine. It is the single most overwrought, overextracted, overstuffed, overripe and over-the-top concoction I have ever tasted. One sip is heavier than a white dwarf star. There are no Earthly fruits that can be used for comparison. It could only have been created by a faulty replicator on the holodeck of the star ship Enterprise. It is the Borg of wine and must be destroyed. We must go back in time to when the winemaker was born and set him upon a more righteous path. The Broken Stones was served alongside a 2008 Sine Qua Non The Line Grenache which resembled Lapierre Morgon in comparison to the Saxum!

My palate is scarred (and scared) for life. I'm going on a Muscadet purge.

David, Cellar Tracker with 92 tasting notes gave it a 93.7 rating....do you think you may have had a flawed bottle?

Nope. It's an ugly, ugly concoction that tasted exactly as it was supposed to. It's not wine. It's a winetini.

Huh. I had a similar experience with the '04 model a couple of years ago. The wine was poured by a friend who hyped the hell out of it. No one wanted to kill his buzz by openly criticizing the stuff. I couldn't say much because I had offered a flawed white Burg IIRC.

My notes are posted below. Don't think I will bother to seek out another vintage.

2004 Saxum Broken Stones - 5/24/2012

Color: Dark purple

Nose – Heavy barnyard/brett initially. After about an hour in air the funk blew off and some blackberry came out. Not much going on at all.

Taste – Almost undrinkable due to brett at first. After time in air the brett diminished some but still overwhelmed the wine. Not pleasant despite the hype. Need to find a different vintage.

But were able to patch your tire with it?

People say complimentary things about Conundrum too.

I resemble that remark.

I went to a pot-luck tasting about 15 years ago; I brought my brand-new-at-the-time favorite appetizer - fried, thin-sliced potato, chèvre and caramelized onion tortes. Someone poured Conundrum with it, and it was a great match. Served them together for years.

Hoke, I'll make the tortes, you bring what we should drink with them instead. 8)

Conundrum was made a little differently back then - hell, even I liked it.

I have not followed it closely. What are they doing differently recently?

Change in blend and more new wood - I presume in an effort to justify the new pricing.

The name was sold as well. Wasn't it?

One of these days we might get Mr. Bueker to come out of his shell and tell us his actual opinion. Until such time I am going to guess that he did not care for this particular wine so much. Too bad I gave up my part-time job at the wine shop. This sounds as if it would sell well to the crowd we catered. We sold tons of Apothic Red and Manage a trois as well as the Conundrum.

James,

I hated it  , and at $85/bottle it is not going to sell to the Apothic crowd.

Trust me, we had some point chasing morons who would have bought it!

This was Saxum, not Turley.
