Ukrainian Wine

Was at the liquor store today and saw this in the Eastern European section. Couldn't resist. Never had Ukrainian wine before, any notes/dessert pairings?

But it's a 2009 vintage, which makes it Ukrainian.

De jure, except in Russia, it's still an Ukrainian wine.

If memory serves, back in the days of the Iron Curtain, Ukraine in general and the Crimea in particular produced a lot of Russia's wine - it was that Black Sea terroir thing, I guess - and the lion's share of it was sweet and red.

I've never had a modern Ukr. wine, but I've had several Massandra Collection wines from 30s and 40s. I served a 1936 "Madeira" to my tasting group, guesses were ....Madeira. Not sure of quality of present day stuff.

Yes Robin - the Crimea was a major producer of wine for the Soviet Union - especially sparkling wine. Unfortunately, during the mid-1980s, Gorbachev ordered the destruction of numerous vineyards in order to clamp down on alcoholism (which didn't achieve much).

I wrote about this subject last month here: http://blog.iwfs.org/2014/03/a-sober-ukraine/
