2006 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (3/9/2014)
Prompted by an I'll Drink to That podcast with Michael Moosebrugger (thanks Levi!), I opened this bottle with tonight's dinner. 7 years post release it has slimmed down, and now presents a primary mineral base, with overtones of apple and peach fruit. The balance is quite fine, and the finish is both salty and fruity. There's not much in the way of aged characteristics at this point. Rather the wine is drinking well in a very early maturity phase.

I like Gobelsburg. They may not be a huge star, but their wines are always at least very competent and at best genuinely exciting.

Haven't had one that was just competent. Unless you are speaking of the entry level Gobelsburger bottlings.

Heiligenstein is one of my favourite vineyards in Austria - it's as beautiful as the high quality fruit it provides. Gobelsburg is a excellent producer with great people! Even their entry levels wines are solid at worst (IMHO).

Have not yet had the pleasure of seeing the Austrian vineyards up close. Someday. Someday.
