We were invited to Gene's Fri night (Valentine's Day) for dinner and I took two Syrahs:
1. BernardBurgaud AC: Cote-Rotie (12.5%) 2000: Dark color w/ some bricking; strong roasted/smokey/NR/espresso some bretty/band-aid/unclean fairly complex nose; tart lovely NR/smokey/roasted/espresso/smoked meats slight unclean/bretty/band-aid/funky flavor w/ some hard/astringent tannins; long tart/metallic/tangy some unclean/bretty/band-aid/funky finish w/ some hard/drying/astringent tannins; some lovely old NorthernRhone character but a bit too unclean & starting to dry out on the palate.

2. Failla Syrah PhoenixRanch/NapaVlly (14.3%) 2001: Dark color w/ light bricking; beautiful bacony/peppery/whole-cluster/smokey some blackberry/peppery/Syrah/Rhonish fairly complex nose; fairly tart/tangy rather smokey/bacony/NR/whole-cluster slight blackberry/peppery/Syrah bit toasty/charred/oak/pencilly complex flavor w/ some hard/astringent/dried-out tannins; long smokey/bacony/NR/whole-cluster/roasted some blackberry/peppery/Syrah finish w/ some hard/astringent tannins; lots of lovely NorthernRhone/whole-cluster character but drying out considerably on the palate.

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Failla: Ehren's PhoenixRanch Syrah has always been my least favorite of his Syrahs; lots of blackberry/Syrah fruit, but not much else. It has, in fact, evolved into a very interesting Calif Syrah, though on its downside now.

2. For Valentine'sDay, Susan was thinking outside the box when she came up w/ a gift for me. She gifted me with two (count'em..2) pork bellies. Susan is such a romantic. I am such a lucky guy and probably the only guy in this GreatNation who received two pork bellies for ValentinyDay. She's a keeper.
