WTN: Turley Zin&PS AidaVnyd '93..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Feb 10, 2014 3:08 pm

Tried these two last night:
1. Turley Zin AidaVnyd/NapaVlly (13.6%) Oakville 1993: Dark/murky color w/ some browning; slight old red/oxidized rather chocolatey/blackberry/Zin bit earthy/loamy some alcoholic some toasty/cedary/pencilly/oak/smokey rather complex/old Zin nose; soft somewhat dried-out/tired bit astringent/tannic some pencilly/cedary/toasty/oak slight chocolatey/blackberry/Zin complex flavor; long rather astringent/tannic/dried out rather cedary/pencilly/toasty/oak slight chocolaty/Zin finish w/ some astringent/dried-out tannins; a rather attractive old Zin nose but pretty tired/dried-out on the palate.

2. Turley PetiteSirah AidaVnyd/NapaVlly (13.4%) 1993: Very dark/black some murky/brown color; some earthy/dusty/OV bit graphite/peppery/PS/pungent slight blackberry some smokey/toasty/oak quite complex rather old-timey/PS nose like an old Foppiano; soft some dried-out/astringent/tannic quite earthy/dusty/OV/graphite/peppery/blackberry some smokey/toasty/oak rather clinky/coarse/rustic bit alcoholic/fumey flavor; long soft bit bretty/rustc/coarse rather earthy/dusty/OV some graphite/peppery/PS some toasty/smokey/oak finish w/ some dried-out/astringent tannins; quite an interesting/old-timey PS/complex nose but a bit too tired/dried-out on the palate.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. These two were from the stash of abandoned cases I stumbled on in the back end of my garage, stored for almost 20 yrs under totally uncontrolled conditions. Most of them have been going down the drain. These two are not at all representative of what these '93's should be like. I was impressed by how good they actually were...given dreadful storage conditions. Like many old wines, they can have good/great noses, but not deliver as much pleasure on the palate. Tonight are the HayneVnyd versions.
These wines were, of course, made during the HelenTurley regime. I was struck by the modest alcohol levels they had.
