Local store put on another tasting "Wine Basics" for newcomers to the wine scene. Well attended with 30 participants, $35 Cdn per head with some cheese.

1) 2012 Giesen Sauv Blanc, NZ. Lots of green peppers, quite herbal, grass, gooseberry, off-dry. So-so at $16.50.
2) 2012 Demorgenzon DMZ Chardonnay S Africa. Thought quite average, hint of oak, creamy, vanilla nose. Mild acidity, light but it sells eh. $20 Cdn.
3) 2010 Karl Erbes Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese, MSR. The `04 is still in the cellar chez Bob but wonder where this might go. Very drinkable now, medium deep lemon color. Apricot, honey, quite sweet for many at tasting but thought acidity balances it all out. Passed around some older rieslings for folks to look at and spoke about trocken style! $23.
4) 2012 Undurraga Sibaris Pinot Noir Reserva Maipo, Chile. Good value for $16. Soft, red berries, strawberry, oak hint, decent acidity. QPR.
5) 2012 Sottano Merlot Mendoza Arg. Did not like the nose at all but tastes better than it smells! Chocolate coated cherries for the ladies but I was not too keen on this effort. $18.
6) 2009 Cameron Hughes Lot 279 Cab Sauv, Napa. Very nice, see notes elsewhere here on the forum.
