2001 Selbach-Oster Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese * - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/25/2013)
Continuing to check in on the 2001s, this was my latest foray into the Selbach-Oster wines. Overall it's maturing, and actually quite close to fully mature at this point. There's notable smokiness, ripe apple, and leafy, fall notes on the nose. The palate is gentler than many 2001s (though it should be noted that this was never the most vibrant of the 2001 Selbach stable, even in its youth), but has fine presence, richness of texture and depth. Overall it's a very pleasing wine to drink over the course of the evening. I would adivse that this spatlese is the one worth drinking up the soonest of the Selbach 2001s. The Zeltingen wines do not seem as mature, even at the kabinett level.
