Well, as to consistency being a criteria for First Growths, it's not like we haven't had poor Moutons, Marguax, or Lafite. :)

Is there any Cali wine that has always been on top of its game? Maybe MB. But if I had to name 5 top Cali Bdx-styled wines I'd like to have in cellar without knowing vintage, my choices would be
Ridge Montebello
Mayacamas
Heitz Marthas
Montelena
Corison

Very true.

Between 1961 and 1985 (thus during 25 years) the great Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Joe Heitz (both his Cabernet and his Martha's Vineyard) were so dominant in terms of quality that it is difficult for me to take anything else into serious consideration.
