WTN: A Riesling & a Sagrantino...(short/boring)

1. Grosset Riesling SpringvaleVnyd/Watervale/ClareVlly (25'th vintage; 11.0%; www.Grosset.com) 2005: Med.dark gold color; strong valve oil/fusel oil/petrol strong floral/lemon/lime/R beautiful complex nose; very tart strong gout de petrol/Mosel valve oil/petrol classic ClareVlly R/floral/lime/lemon/citrus flavor; very long/lingering tart/saline/tangy strong floral/lemon/lime/R/floral some Mosel valve oil/ppetrol complex finish; lots of petrol character & starting to develop some nice complexity; needs more age and will probably go another 10-15 yrs; a steal for an ageable white at $25.00 (LCSWS)

2. Colpetrone DOCG: Montefalco Sagrantino (14.5%; www.Saiagricola.It) 2007: Very dark color; very strong intense black cherry/Sangio-like/licorice some earthy/mineral/green olive/RCCola rather perfumed nose; quite tannic/hard/astringent tart strong black cherry/licorice/pungent some earthy/truffly/mineral/graphite flavor; long quite hard/tannic/bitter rather strong black cherry/licorice/RCCola/green olive bit earthy/mineral/graphite finish w/ fierce tannins; big/huge fruit w/ very aggressive/hard/bitter tannins that I'm not sure it will ever shed; great (relative) price at $26.00 (SFW&S)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Colpetrone: I don't have a lot of experience w/ Montefalco Sagrantino and following their aging. I tend to stick to the Rosso, which is mostly Sangiovese, primarily because Sagrantinos are so frightfully expensive. This wine had such hard/aggressive/rasping/feirce tannins that it takes a real leap of faith for me to believe it will ever evolve into something that's a pleasure to drink. I loved the black cherry/licorice nose...but it sure hurt on the palate.
This was a mispriced wine. The distributor priced it to SusanEgan as the Rosso. When she pointed out their error, they refused to correct the price upward.
