2007 Rancho de las Flores Cabernet Sauvignon. From a tiny winery at the very southern end of the Calistoga AVA on Silverado Trail (the Saint Helena AVA sign lies a few hundred feet to the south). Extremely rustic little winery off the beaten path. Mr. Werther told me he usually picks his grapes in early September, and it is refreshing to taste a Cabernet from this far north in the valley that is NOT jammy and overblown...and hot (this wine clocked in at 13.5% ABV and did not taste any hotter than that at all!). Despite the plasticork  this was a fine bottle of wine, with some earthy funk, soft tannins and rich mouthfeel and a touch of plushness and richness in the black fruit flavors. A nice surprise!

2007 Domaine Fontsant Clos de Centurion. Kermit Lynch cannot do wrong! The Carrignane really dominates this Corbiere, witht he pronounced rustic weedyness in the red fruit that I for some reason enjoy. Very balanced, with the bottle age lending its smoothness to the wine. Nice stuff!
